What does the word “companion” mean to you? Does just hearing the word evoke images of someone special, whether a person or a pet?

I have been married to my closest companion for 25 years this month! I wanted to write a special post to honor him and the relationship we share together, so I looked up the word “companion”—but the first dictionary definition felt lacking. The words just didn’t capture the thought I was trying to convey.

Yes, my husband fulfills the definition of someone I spend a lot of time with, but to me, he is more. He is also my helper, my partner, and my best friend that I trust with my life.

So, I kept reading. The second definition came closer to my feelings: a pair intended to complement or match each other. Over the years, my husband and I have learned the art of complementing each other, and it is no easy task. It is actually a delicate balance. Yet I know that my husband always has my best interest and our family’s best interest at heart, just like I do. Our goal is to always strive to be better, learn more, and grow together emotionally, physically, and mentally.

But still, to me, a companion—my companion—is more.

The final definition for “companion” is easy to overlook, but is where I found the more I was searching for: a covering over the hatchway leading below decks. This definition references the nautical term “companion,” short for companionway.

This area of the ship is where sailors take protection from the storm.

The area where sailors go to rest.

The area located and designed for strength—to let sailors in and keep the water out.

This, to me, is the essence of a companion: not just someone to laugh with and who shares in the celebrations of our lives, but someone we turn to when we are in need of shelter, warmth, love, advice, and character adjustments.

When life is beating me down with the crushing blows of loss, betrayal, health issues, and unthinkable events, my companion—my husband—is always there for me.

My friends, the skies are not always blue and the sailing is not always smooth, but a companion provides a place of shelter. A safe place “below deck” where we can escape the storm and find affection and counsel. A place of refuge where we can sit in silence, cry, or just talk with the confidence of knowing that when the storms pass, this place will still be here—waiting for us, welcoming us to share our lives together.

The word “companion” evokes images of someone special in my mind … as well as thoughts of the special place he provides for me.

Who is your companion—your more—through life’s storms?
